Polling Students to Check Understanding:

Audience responses are a quick, engaging way to pause your instruction and see how well your students are understanding the material.

A free web-based tool like Poll Everywhere is one to use. Poll Everywhere allows teachers to construct multiple choice and open-ended questions that can be used to pause a lecture to take a quick snapshot of how well students are understanding the material. You can write prompts that allow students to express their thoughts. "one thing I don't understand is..." and "A topic I'm concerned about is..." or, "An example of this topic in real life is..."

Major out comes you will see when poling:

1. Teachers get a larger number of responses

2. Students report that they're more active and engaged

3. There's increased motivation to try to understand the material

4. The questions help students clarify their thinking

5. Using questions gives the teacher opportunity to adjust the pace of the classes based on student understanding
